Sexual Abuse Treatment Services are provided to families that have one or more members who have been sexually abused either by a family member or non-family member in a care-taking role.  The offender or perpetrator (the individual who initiates the sexual activity) may have been someone within the immediate family, stepfamily, a neighbor, or a stranger.  Both boys and girls are accepted for services and the clients range in age from preschool to 17 years old.
Sexual abuse can profoundly affect the entire family.  Therefore, treatment of the child’s caregiver is an integral part of the program.  Participation in and commitment to treatment by the parent(s) or caregiver is expected as part of the child’s treatment.
Treatment emphasizes a team approach to provide comprehensive treatment to each family member so that coordinated and compatible treatment goals and objectives can be established.  The treatment team consists of the various professional counselors who are offering direct clinical services to the victim, and the family.  In addition, a system approach is used in which the problem of intra-family sexual abuse is viewed in the context of the dynamics of the family unit.  Treatment is also coordinated with other involved agencies on a monthly basis.
The Behavioral Health Division Sexual Abuse Treatment Services are funded in part by the State of Florida, Department of Health.
