Regency Center for Women and Infants Services
A Message from the Regency Nursing Staff
The Regency Center for Women and Infants is working hard to provide our patients with the best care possible. We want your birthing experience to be a special time for you and your baby. We promote an age old tradition for mothers and their newly born babies which involves keeping mom and baby together as much as possible, decreasing separation time. The nursing staff and physicians promote skin to skin contact between you and your baby immediately after delivery. Skin to skin care has many proven benefits for babies and their parents. It involves holding your baby close and having your skin touching theirs.
Skin to Skin Care
How? Remove any clothing from waist up. Baby wears only a diaper. Place baby against your chest. Wrap a sheet, blanket, or clothing around both you and your baby.

Who? Mother, Father, and/or support person can perform skin to skin
Benefits for infant: Stable body temperature, better breathing, pain reliever
Benefits for you: Better bonding, increased feelings of attachments, increased milk supply, more confidence in caring for your infant
Exclusive Breast Milk Feedings
The Regency staff wants to support breastfeeding families in every way possible. To increase the number of infants who have had only breast milk at discharge, your nurse will ask, “How can we support you in breastfeeding your baby?” This way the staff will be able to assess your breastfeeding needs and how you prefer to learn about breastfeeding.
Another way to increase the goal of more exclusive breast milk feedings is to encourage mothers to offer expressed breast milk if the baby is unable to nurse at the breast. In the first few days after birth, it is often easier to express milk by hand rather than to use a pump. Hand expression involves squeezing breast milk from the breast to store and feed to your baby. Breasts may be more responsive to the skin to skin feeling of hand expression than to plastic pump parts.
