Labor 1:1 or 1:2; Antepartum 1:2-3; Postpartum 1:3

Typical pt diagnosis:

Approximately 2000 births/year Labor & delivery, pre-eclampsia, preterm labor

Common skills utilized:

Critical thinking is very important; OB staff is proficient in care of labor pt., assisting in delivery, care of newborn at delivery, scrubbing for c-sections/D&Cs, recovery of same pts., triage of pregnant patients

Most common meds / those nurses must be familiar with:

Magnesium sulfate, pitocin, terbutaline, stadol/phenergan, ampicillin, methergine, Hemabate, Labatelol

Care extenders used:

Occasional Nurse Techs to assist

Certification for Differential:

RNC, through NCC (National Cert Corp)

Usually a “happy” place to work; staff in entire facility friendly and close; learn multiple skills for many aspects of Nursing (OR skills~scrubbing, circulating and recovery; ICU skills for pts with HELLP syndrome, DIC, severe preeclampsia, post-partum hemorrhage)
