Nurse Tech & Practical Nurse Tech - Positions At WHH For Student Nurses

Nursing students who are actively pursuing their degree to become a registered nurse (RN) are eligible for employment as Nurse Techs (NT). Nursing students who are actively pursuing their certificate to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) are eligible for employment as Practical Nurse Techs (PNT). Students are eligible for employment in these programs after completing their first semester of nursing (Fundamentals). They may continue throughout their nursing program. We at Winter Haven Hospital highly recommend that students pursue concurrent employment experience in an acute clinical setting for a number of reasons:

• Additional hours in the clinical setting provides additional opportunities to practice basic skills and interactions with patients, families, staff and physicians-lending to enhanced confidence and competence
• Additional hours in the clinical setting provides additional opportunities to observe procedures, treatments, etc. that the student might otherwise only "read" about
• Students are able to earn income
• Students are able to work a schedule that will accommodate their ever-changing school days & hours
• Students are able to "try out" a clinical area/specialty; it is not uncommon for students to "think" they want to do one type of nursing-only to find out they really desire something completely different! Functioning in an area as a NT or PNT allows a student to experience the area/specialty first-hand-transferring to other areas, if desired-and then make an informed decision by their graduation date (at which time they can start their nursing careers where they want to be).
• Students are able to "try out" our organization-and whether our mission, vision, values, goals and culture is a "fit" for them
• Managers and staff are able to "try out" students and determine if they are a fit for us
• The orientation process is greatly enhanced if a graduate has already worked on a unit as a NT or PNT; they know their co-workers (and their co-workers know them), the logistics of the unit (i.e., where supplies are kept), the patient types of the unit, many of the physicians, unit-specific processes, organizational processes, etc.
