Caring for the Community

In this issue of Here's To Your Health we have featured our new significant initiatives to enhance our Cancer Care services.

Lance Anastasio

These enhancements will be remarkable, giving us state of the art equipment to more accurately pinpoint and kill cancerous tissue and not harm "normal tissue" which often causes uncomfortable, ill effects for patients.

We have engaged consultants to assist us with our planning for open-heart surgery and other essential services.  We anticipate providing a new main lobby and making outpatient services more easily accessible on the first floor of the hospital.  These will be major renovations over the next 3 years.

We are pleased to have added Dr. Angela Alfaro to our Family Health Center in Winter Haven.  Dr. Alfaro joins Dr. Donald Clark at the Clinic located at 100 Avenue I., N.E. (292-4077).

We have assisted 18 students with scholarships to become healthcare professionals in the last year as a result of our Foundation’s new Scholarship Endowment Fund. Sponsors and attendees of our last two Fall Galas have helped us build this Fund and we are very grateful for their generosity and support.

We are extremely fortunate to have 24 new graduate nurses join us from the Polk Community College Nursing Program.  The Polk Community College nursing program has an exceptional reputation throughout the state. A major indicator of their success has been the extremely high pass rate their nursing graduates attain on the state nursing licensure exam. We are very pleased to have Sharon Davis, PhD, RN the Director of the P.C.C. Nursing Program, on our Board of Trustees.

In addition to the new graduates from P.C.C., four Filipino nurses have joined us and they are doing remarkably well.  We anticipate getting another 36 Filipino nurses in 2004.  Our numerous strategies to fill nursing vacancies are really showing positive results. As always, Here's To Your Health features the numerous health screening and educational programs that we offer to the Community.  We welcome your attendance and your valued input on programs or services that you believe would be beneficial.
